Salivary pH

The pH level is critical in maintaining oral health and preventing dental issues. The ideal pH balance in the mouth is slightly alkaline, around 7. This pH level keeps the harmful bacteria in check and promotes the growth of beneficial bacteria that help protect against oral diseases. However, when the pH in the mouth becomes acidic, typically below 5.5, it creates an environment where harmful bacteria thrive, and tooth enamel begins to erode.

The mouth naturally contains diverse bacteria, some of which are harmful and can lead to tooth decay and gum disease. Sugary and acidic foods and drinks can significantly lower the mouth’s pH, increasing the risk of dental problems. Therefore, maintaining a balanced pH is crucial. Regular brushing, flossing, and using fluoride-based oral care products help restore and maintain a healthy pH level, ensuring the protection and longevity of our teeth and gums. Additionally, consuming a balanced diet and limiting sugary and acidic foods and beverages significantly preserve a healthy mouth pH and overall oral health.
