Tooth Extraction
Tooth Extraction is an outpatient procedure conducted by a dentist to pull a tooth from its placement in the jaw bone. It is done due to various reasons of dental health preservation or improvement. The usual purpose is to remove decaying tooth when it is already too damaged to be repaired by filling it in. Another reason is to make space for adjustments such as in cases when a patient needs braces. Other times, it is necessary when the mouth becomes too crowded because the size of the teeth of a person is not proportional to the space in his/her mouth.
During this procedure, the dentist shall apply a local anesthetic to numb the area involved. In some severe cases, the dentist may give the patient general anesthesia. If the tooth is impacted, the dentist may cut a tissue that covers the tooth and carefully remove it by rocking it back and forth to loosen it up.
Tooth extraction may relieve pressure in the gums, prevent infection, or produce aesthetic results.
